To get your website cited by AI, you need to make sure AI can reach your site, pull a clear answer from it, and trust it enough to use. That means clean technical foundations, content structured around clear questions and answers, and signals that show you’re a real, credible business.
Not showing up? You are not alone.
Only 45% of brands that lead in traditional local search also show up in AI recommendations, and locations get recommended just 1.2% of the time by ChatGPT, 7.4% by Perplexity, 11% by Gemini — making AI visibility up to 30x harder than classic local. (SOCi via StreetFight)
Getting cited by AI isn’t luck, and it isn’t a trick. It comes down to making your content clear enough to read, structured enough to quote, and trustworthy enough to recommend. This guide gives you the foundations that apply to any page, then the specific tips that matter most for blogs, service pages, and product pages.
The order to work in
- Foundations first — make sure AI can reach and read your site at all.
- Structure your content — definitions, question headings, direct answers, lists.
- Add schema — so AI understands what each page is.
- Build trust — credentials, consistency, mentions across the web.
- Tailor by page type — blogs, services, and products each need slightly different things.

The foundations: do these first
Before any clever content work, AI has to be able to reach your site and read it — so these foundations come first, and they apply to every page you have. If these aren’t right, everything else is wasted effort.
- Don’t block AI crawlers. Check your robots.txt isn’t disallowing bots like GPTBot, ClaudeBot, and PerplexityBot, and that no security plugin, firewall, or Cloudflare setting is quietly blocking them.
- Make sure your content is in the raw HTML. AI reads the page source, not the rendered version. If your text only loads via JavaScript, AI may see nothing. View Page Source and search for a sentence to check.
- Get indexed in Bing. ChatGPT leans on Bing for live results, so being in Bing Webmaster Tools matters for citation there.
- Keep your business details consistent everywhere. Same name, address, and phone number across your site, Google Business Profile, directories, and socials, so AI can confirm you’re one real business.
These four are the ground everything else stands on. Once they’re sorted, the page-type work below is what gets you actually cited.
Do I need to update my website content for AI?
The latest research indicates that updating website content is very important for AI.
SE Ranking: found content updated within three months earned an average of 6 citations versus 3.6 for older pages, a 67% advantage and Google AI Overviews pull 85% of citations from content published within the last two years. (Ahrefs)
Princeton / Georgia Tech / IIT Delhi: adding statistics lifted AI visibility +41%; quoting sources and citing authorities helped more; keyword stuffing lowered visibility. Pages mixing text + images + structured data had 156% higher selection rates than text-only. (MacMD Viewer)
Where you put the answer on the page decides whether you get cited. Growth Memo 2026: 44.2% of LLM citations come from the first 30% of the text, 31.1% middle, 24.7% conclusion (Rankio).
How to Get Service Pages Cited by AI
Service pages get cited when AI can clearly understand what you do, who you do it for, and why you’re trustworthy. Five of the highest-impact things for service pages:
- State exactly what the service is, plainly, near the top. Don’t make AI infer it from clever marketing copy. Say it directly.
- Name your service areas and locations. AI answers a lot of “near me” and location questions, so make where you work explicit.
- Add a “who this is for and not for” section. AI frequently answers fit-based questions and cites pages that spell this out.
- Show proof and experience. Real credentials, years in business, projects completed, and reviews all tell AI you’re credible.
- Answer the practical questions. Cost or price range where you can, how it works, and what happens next, all as clear, extractable answers.
The full method is in our GEO for Services checklist, with every step ordered by impact.
How to Get Product Pages Cited by AI
Product pages get cited when AI can pull clear, structured facts about the product and trust them. Five of the highest-impact things for product pages:
- Put the key facts in a structured block. Price, what it’s for, key specs, availability, laid out as clear facts rather than buried in prose.
- Write a plain product description. A clear sentence saying what the product is and who it’s for, near the top, gives AI a clean answer to quote.
- Add product-specific FAQs. Cost, comparisons, fit, delivery — the questions buyers actually ask, with direct answers and FAQ schema.
- Add Product schema. This is the single highest-impact piece of structured data for a product page, telling AI the name, price, and availability explicitly.
- Include trust signals. Genuine reviews and clear, consistent details help AI trust the product enough to recommend it.
The complete list is in our GEO for Products checklist.
How to Get Blog Posts Cited by AI
Blog posts get cited when AI can lift a clean, self-contained answer straight out of them. Here are five of the highest-impact things for blogs:
- Put a plain definition near the top. One clear sentence defining the topic, ideally in bold, gives AI something clean to quote.
- Use question-based headings. Write your H2s and H3s the way people actually ask the question, then answer it in the first sentence underneath.
- Add a Quick Answer or summary near the top. A short summary of the key points gives AI something to extract immediately, without digging.
- Add 3 to 5 FAQs with direct answers. Concise, factual answers, with FAQ schema, are some of the most-cited content on any blog.
- Make each section stand alone. Avoid “as mentioned above.” AI often pulls one section out on its own, so each needs to make sense by itself.
That’s the short version. Our free GEO for Blogs checklist walks through all 50+ steps in order of impact.
How to check if it’s working
You check your AI visibility by asking the AI tools directly and tracking whether you’re mentioned over time. A simple routine:
- Ask ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, Grok, etc., the questions your customers would ask, and see whether you’re mentioned, or a competitor is.
- Note which page of yours, if any, gets cited, and what page the competitor’s citation comes from.
- Repeat monthly, because AI platforms change constantly, and visibility needs to be maintained rather than set once.
Our take: getting cited by AI isn’t about gaming it. It’s about being so clear and useful that AI has no reason not to quote you. Do the foundations, structure your content, earn trust, and the citations follow. — Georgie, Fruitful Online

Frequently asked questions
How do I get my website cited by AI?
Make sure AI can reach and read your site, structure your content with clear definitions, question-based headings, direct answers and FAQs, add schema so AI understands each page, and build trust through real credentials and consistent details across the web.
How long does it take to get cited by AI?
Technical fixes can have an effect fairly quickly once AI re-reads your site. Building the content depth and trust that gets you consistently cited takes longer, and it’s ongoing rather than one-and-done, because AI platforms keep changing.
Do I need to do anything different for blogs, services, and product pages?
Yes. The foundations are the same, but AI reads each page type a little differently. Blogs need clear definitions and FAQs, service pages need clear scope and location and fit information, and product pages need structured facts and Product schema.
Can I get cited by AI without ranking in Google?
Sometimes, yes. AI can cite a page that ranks modestly if it answers the question well. But you do need to be findable, crawlable, indexed, and readable, which is what good SEO foundations give you.
Do I need technical skills to do this?
Mostly no. Most of it is clear writing and sensible structure. A few steps, like schema, are more technical, but they can be done with simple instructions or handed to someone who does them. Our checklists are written in plain English for exactly this reason.
